Caring for Your Charcuterie Board

Your handcrafted board from The Urban Plank is built to last for years with proper care. Follow these simple maintenance tips to keep your board looking beautiful and performing its best.

Cleaning & Daily Care

  • Hand wash only using warm water and mild dish soap
  • Wipe clean immediately after use — do not allow liquids to sit
  • Dry thoroughly with a towel after washing
  • Never soak your board in water
  • Do not place in the dishwasher
  • Avoid harsh chemicals, bleach, or abrasive scrubbers

Oiling & Conditioning

  • Apply food-safe mineral oil regularly to prevent drying and cracking. I use Howard Butcher Block Conditioner.
  • Recondition more frequently in dry climates or during winter months
  • For best results, use a quality board conditioner or butcher block balm
  • Allow oil to absorb overnight before use
  • Wipe away excess oil with a clean cloth

Protecting Your Board

  • Avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight or extreme heat
  • Do not place hot pans or cookware directly on the board
  • Store flat whenever possible to help prevent warping
  • Keep away from standing water or damp environments
  • Use both sides of the board evenly when possible to maintain balance

Natural Wood Characteristics

  • Wood is a natural material and may develop small marks, color variations, or grain movement over time
  • Knife marks and light wear are normal and add character to your handcrafted piece
  • Minor surface scratches can often be refreshed with light sanding and re-oiling. I can recondition your board for a small fee if needed!

Foods & Staining

  • Promptly clean foods that may stain, including berries, beets, oils, or strongly colored sauces
  • Avoid leaving wet cheeses, citrus, or acidic foods on the board for extended periods
  • Use parchment paper or small ramekins for oily or messy items if desired

Long-Term Maintenance

  • If your board feels rough or dry, lightly sand with fine-grit sandpaper and reapply conditioner
  • Consistent maintenance greatly extends the life and beauty of your board
  • With proper care, your board can last for many years and age beautifully over time
